Break Out of the Box: A Free Class to Kickstart Your Year

I Wanted to Feel Sexier

When I signed up for my first pole dance class in Dallas, it wasn’t because I loved fitness (I didn’t) or needed a new hobby (I have too many). I just wanted to feel sexier.

Growing up in a conservative missionary community, then pursuing a career in hard science, I got a lot of mixed messages about femininity. As a Christian woman, I was taught not to be a "stumbling block." As a woman in science, I was encouraged to suppress anything traditionally feminine.

But through pole and dance, I discovered something amazing: I can be smart, sexy, Christian, and a happily married, crunchy, DIY homeschool mom—all at the same time.

(Side note: I’m also a bit of a theology nerd and love talking about women in the Bible or the theology of sensuality. Just ask me!)

Do You Like Your Boxes?

Society loves to put us in neat little boxes. My challenge to you is this: Do you like your boxes?

Or are you squeezing yourself into expectations you don’t even believe in, just because you think that’s what you’re supposed to do?

For me, pole dance was about breaking out of the box. I wasn’t someone who enjoyed traditional exercise classes—I get bored so easily. But when I discovered dance, everything changed.

Why Dance?

Here’s what I love about dance:

  • It’s cathartic. Big gestures and flowing movements let you channel your feelings and release stress.

  • It’s ancient. People have been dancing for as long as history has existed. Modern therapy is just now catching up to the idea that movement can heal, but humans have always known this.

  • It’s joyful. Forget boring, repetitive workouts. Dance makes movement fun and something you’ll actually look forward to.

Fitness That Feels Good

Here’s the thing: So many people start exercising to lose weight or look a certain way. But what if you started by liking yourself exactly as you are?

When you find a form of movement that brings you joy, something amazing happens. You might lose weight, or not—but you’ll feel better about yourself either way. And that’s what really matters.

For me, discovering sensual movement totally changed how I saw myself. The barrier to entry is so low—you just have to give yourself permission to experiment with being sexy, without judgment.
